Notice from a safe distance

Repeated breaker trips, flickering, sparks and heat damage deserve attention. Record what you notice without opening equipment or touching a suspicious surface. CPSC: home wiring hazards ↗

A website cannot establish whether a circuit is safe. If something looks or sounds dangerous, keep people away and seek qualified help.

Know when to leave

Smoke, fire, active arcing, a strong burning smell or exposed potentially energized equipment can require immediate action. Get to safety and call 911 for immediate danger. Do not approach electrical equipment through water. See urgent help.

Do not defeat protection

Do not bypass a protective device or repeatedly reset one that trips. Do not substitute a larger breaker to stop tripping. These actions can leave wiring exposed to hazards. Arrange assessment of the underlying problem.

Leave panel interiors, service equipment and wiring alterations to qualified professionals. Keep covers in place and children away from damaged devices.

Plan everyday use

Avoid damaged cords and plugs. Use extension cords only for temporary needs, with equipment appropriate to the location. If a room depends on permanent extension cords, discuss additional circuits or outlets with an electrician. Electrical Safety Foundation: home safety ↗

Follow manufacturer instructions for testing protective devices and alarms. Keep equipment access clear. Ask an electrician about water-damaged equipment before it is used again.

Backup power has separate risks

Never connect a generator through a household outlet. A portable generator must run outdoors, at least 20 feet from the home, with exhaust directed away from buildings. CPSC: portable generator and heating safety ↗

Read the generator planning guide for the distinction between portable equipment and a professionally installed standby system.
