Name the question you need answered, then request an assessment with written findings and clear limitations.
Choose the right kind of review
A municipal permit inspection checks permitted work against applicable requirements. It is not necessarily a complete condition report for every existing circuit in the home.
A condition assessment by an electrician can address concerns about an existing system. A diagnostic service call investigates a specific symptom. A general home inspection may identify visible concerns but can lead to a recommendation for a specialist.
For a purchase or renovation
Give the electrician the relevant inspection report, planned equipment and known symptoms. Ask which areas will be accessible and what limitations the report will state. Concealed wiring cannot always be assessed without further access.
Request findings separated by urgency and scope: conditions needing immediate attention, recommended corrections and optional improvements. An unexplained list of replacements is less useful than a documented reason for each item.
For work under a City permit
Check the required inspections on the permit record. Ask the contractor when each stage must be inspected and how corrections will be handled. Do not close up work before required inspections. See the City process guide.
Retain approval records, equipment details and a clearly labeled circuit directory after completion. A paid invoice alone is not the same as final inspection documentation.
Ask before booking
- What exactly will be inspected, tested and documented?
- Will I receive photographs and a written assessment?
- What areas or concealed conditions are outside the scope?
- Is the fee independent of any subsequent repair quote?
- How will urgent conditions be communicated?
